WIPO IP Portal - Short Review

Legal Tools

The WIPO IP Portal is a comprehensive online platform designed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to provide a unified and efficient access point for a wide range of intellectual property (IP) services. Here is an overview of what the portal does and its key features:

Purpose and Scope

The WIPO IP Portal serves as a one-stop shop for users to interact with WIPO’s full range of online IP services, catering to the needs of IP Offices, businesses, and individuals involved in the protection and management of intellectual property. It streamlines the process of protecting inventions, trademarks, designs, and geographical indications internationally.

Key Features

Unified Navigation and Single Sign-On

The portal offers a harmonized top navigation bar, allowing users to move seamlessly between different IP services. It also features a single sign-on capability, enabling users to log in once using their WIPO Account credentials to access all available services.

Customizable Dashboard

Logged-in users can customize their dashboard using over twenty widgets. These widgets provide direct access to key service-specific functions, such as quick searches in WIPO’s global databases, access to favorite WIPO online services, and a notepad. IP Office users can also utilize widgets like the “Distribution Reports” widget for Madrid and Hague System fee-related information.

Streamlined Categorization

The services are grouped under three main sub-categories: Search, File & Manage, and Pay. This categorization makes navigation more intuitive, especially for accessing the Global Brand Database, which is available under the Search sub-category for Trademarks and Geographical Indications.

Centralized Messaging System

The portal includes a centralized messaging system accessible through the bell icon in the navigation bar. This system provides notifications for various services such as ePCT, Digital Access Service (DAS), Centralized Access to Search and Examination (CASE), and financial updates like Fee Distribution Reports.

Payment Processing

Users can view and process payments for Hague transactions, with plans to include PCT and Madrid transactions in the future. The portal also introduces new payment channels, including PayPal, in addition to the traditional use of the WIPO Current Account.

Global Databases and Search Capabilities

The WIPO IP Portal provides access to global databases, enabling users to search for brand information, including trademarks, appellations of origin, and official emblems from multiple national and international sources. This facilitates comprehensive searches and management of IP assets.

Support and Resources

The portal includes a HELP section in the navigation bar, offering resources, useful links, and contact information for specific services. Additionally, users can contact the support team for any queries or updates needed in their IP Office profiles.

Additional Functionality

ePCT System

The portal integrates the ePCT system, which is a secure browser-based system for managing PCT applications electronically. This system is particularly useful for IP Offices and applicants, offering a range of functions based on the office’s capacity (Receiving Office, International Searching Authority, International Preliminary Examining Authority, etc.).

Personalized Notifications and Bookmarks

Users can bookmark their favorite services and widgets, now renamed “My Favorites,” and receive personalized notifications through the messaging system. Overall, the WIPO IP Portal is designed to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of WIPO’s IP services, making it easier for users to protect, manage, and utilize their intellectual property assets on a global scale.
