Product Overview: FactStream

FactStream is an innovative fact-checking app developed by the Duke Reporters’ Lab as part of the Duke Tech & Check Cooperative, a $1.2 million project supported by the Knight Foundation, the Facebook Journalism Project, and the Craig Newmark Foundation.

What FactStream Does

FactStream is designed to provide users with real-time and daily fact-checking capabilities, making it an invaluable tool for verifying the accuracy of statements made by politicians, public figures, and other organizations. The app aggregates fact-checks from three of the nation’s leading fact-checking organizations: FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, and The Washington Post.

Key Features and Functionality

1. Live Fact-Checking

FactStream was initially conceived for live fact-checking during political events such as debates and speeches. It provides users with pop-up notifications and real-time analyses of claims made during these events, allowing users to access full fact-check articles and additional context immediately.

2. Daily Fact-Check Stream

The app features a “daily stream” that updates users with the latest fact-checks from the partnered organizations. This allows users to stay informed on a daily basis, beyond just live events.

3. Custom Notifications

Users can set up custom notifications to receive alerts for every new fact-check or for specific severe ratings such as Four Pinocchios from The Washington Post, False from FactCheck.org, or Pants on Fire from PolitiFact.

4. Search and Filter

The app enables users to search fact-checks by the name of the person or group making the statement, by subject, or by keyword. This feature helps users track trends and identify which statements and subjects are being frequently checked.

5. Integration with ClaimReview

FactStream leverages the ClaimReview tagging system, a global partnership with Google, to gather and display fact-check summaries. This integration ensures that the app provides comprehensive and authoritative fact-checking data.

6. User Interface and Accessibility

Available as a free download from the App Store for iPhone and iPad users, FactStream offers a user-friendly interface that allows users to quickly access and share fact-checks on various social media platforms.

Additional Capabilities

  • Trend Analysis: By viewing the work of multiple fact-checkers in one stream, users can spot trends in which statements and subjects are being checked and which politicians or organizations are frequently inaccurately representing facts.
  • Future Expansion: The app is planned to include fact-checks from other organizations in the future, further broadening its scope and utility.

FactStream serves as a powerful tool for anyone seeking to verify information in real-time, making it an essential resource in today’s information-rich environment.
