  • 50-69: Somewhat Walkable – Some errands can be accomplished on foot.
  • 25-49: Car-Dependent – Most errands require a car.

Data Collection and Analysis

Walk Score uses a patented algorithm to analyze hundreds of walking routes to nearby amenities. The system relies on data from multiple sources, including Google, Factual, Great Schools, Open Street Map, the U.S. Census, Localeze, and contributions from the Walk Score user community. Amenities such as groceries, dining, shopping, and entertainment are weighted differently, with closer amenities receiving higher points. A decay function ensures that points are awarded based on the distance to these amenities, with no points given for amenities beyond a 30-minute walk.



Pedestrian Friendliness

In addition to amenity proximity, Walk Score evaluates pedestrian friendliness by analyzing factors such as population density, block length, and intersection density. Shorter blocks with more intersections are considered more pedestrian-friendly, as they offer more walking routes and narrower streets, which can reduce speed limits and enhance access to nearby amenities.

  • Transit Score: Measures access to public transportation.
  • Bike Score: Evaluates the presence of bike lanes, trails, and other cycling infrastructure.
