Product Overview of Pure (Elsevier)

What is Pure?

Pure is a Current Research Information System (CRIS) developed by Elsevier, designed to manage and integrate a wide range of research-related data for institutions. It serves as a comprehensive platform for research information management, supporting various aspects of the research lifecycle.

Key Features and Functionality

Research Networking and Collaboration

Pure enhances research networking capabilities through the integration of SciVal Experts, allowing researchers to identify subject area expertise for collaboration opportunities. The system utilizes Elsevier’s Fingerprint Engine for semantic searching, increasing researcher visibility across participating customer portals.

Funding Discovery

The Funding Discovery module streamlines the process of finding funding opportunities by providing targeted and up-to-date funding notifications, helping researchers to identify relevant funding sources efficiently.

Data Integration and Management

Pure is highly interoperable, allowing for the integration of data from various sources such as Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and ORCID. This integration enables automated collection, de-duplication, authentication, linking, and sharing of data, ensuring a comprehensive and accurate view of research activities.

Profile Management and Visibility

Researchers can maintain up-to-date profiles, including deep publication histories, through the Profile Refinement Service. This service uses manually corrected Scopus author profiles to pre-populate researcher profiles. Pure also integrates with ORCID, enabling the automatic population and updating of ORCID records with publication data from Pure.

Reporting and Analytics

Pure offers robust reporting and analytics capabilities, including the generation of research management reports, performance reviews, and benchmarking. It supports the preparation of submissions for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and other funder compliance requirements. The system provides reports and dashboards for all data, helping institutions make better strategic decisions.

Workflow and Validation

The system features configurable workflows to validate data, ensuring accuracy and compliance. It also includes role-based access control to manage user permissions and data visibility, and supports single sign-on integration for seamless user authentication.

Modular Design

Pure has a modular design that covers the full research life cycle, allowing institutions to manage data on research staff, grants and contracts, publications, research impact, collaborations, and post-graduate research students. Institutions can add extra modules as needed, such as the dedicated assessment module for REF submissions.

Public Visibility

Pure raises the public visibility of an institution’s research through its Research Portal, making it easier for external stakeholders to access and view research outputs and activities. This enhances the institution’s research profile and facilitates broader collaboration and engagement.

Benefits

  • Reduced Administrative Burden: Researchers can manage their own profiles, reducing the administrative workload.
  • Increased Visibility: Enhanced visibility of researchers and their work through the Pure Portal.
  • Consistent Data: Easy integration with external systems ensures consistent and high-quality data.
  • Streamlined Reporting: Simplifies reporting across all types of data, including research outputs, projects, and funding.
  • Compliance: Helps meet funder compliance requirements and prepares institutions for REF submissions.

In summary, Pure by Elsevier is a powerful research information management system that integrates diverse data sources, enhances research networking and funding discovery, and provides robust reporting and analytics. It is designed to support the full research life cycle, reduce administrative burdens, and increase the visibility and impact of research activities.
