What are Renaissance Star Assessments?

Renaissance Star Assessments are a suite of computer-adaptive tests designed to measure students’ reading, math, and early literacy skills. These assessments are part of the Renaissance Learning portfolio and are used to monitor student achievement and growth, aligning with state and Common Core standards.

Adaptive Testing

Renaissance Star Assessments are computer-adaptive tests (CATs) that adjust their difficulty in real-time based on a student’s responses. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question becomes more challenging, and if a student answers incorrectly, the next question becomes easier. This adaptive nature ensures each student receives a personalized testing experience.



Comprehensive Skill Assessment

The assessments cover a wide range of skills:

  • Star Reading: Evaluates vocabulary, reading comprehension, analysis of literary text, author’s craft, argument analysis, and text evaluation. Students complete 34 reading questions, with a focus on different domains depending on their grade level.
  • Star Math: Assesses mathematical abilities including number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability. It also evaluates problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning.
  • Star Early Literacy: Monitors the progress of early readers, focusing on skills necessary to become independent readers.


Metrics for Performance and Growth

The assessments provide multiple metrics to measure student performance and growth:

  • Scaled Score: Ranges from 0 to 1400 for Reading and Math, and from 300 to 900 for Early Literacy. This score is based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct responses.
  • Percentile Rank: Compares a student’s scaled score to their grade-level peers nationwide, providing a norm-referenced performance measure.
  • Tier System: Categorizes students into four performance tiers based on their Percentile Rank: Intensive Intervention, Strategic Intervention, On Watch, and At/Above Benchmark. This helps identify students needing additional support or interventions.


Frequency and Administration

Students typically take the Star Assessments three times a year (fall, winter, and spring) to track their progress throughout the year. The tests are administered online and usually take about 20 minutes to complete, although some students may require more time.

The assessments provide immediate results, enabling teachers to evaluate each student’s strengths and weaknesses quickly. This data helps in developing personalized instruction plans, identifying areas that need improvement, and monitoring growth in relation to state standards and tests.
