Respondus LockDown Browser Overview
Respondus LockDown Browser is a specialized web browser designed to secure and lock down the testing environment for online assessments, ensuring the integrity and fairness of exams.
What it Does
Respondus LockDown Browser creates a controlled testing environment that prevents students from accessing unauthorized resources during online exams. When an instructor requires the use of LockDown Browser for a test, students must use this browser exclusively to take the exam, as it cannot be accessed through standard browsers like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge.
Key Features and Functionality
Locking Down the Testing Environment
- LockDown Browser prevents students from printing, copying, or accessing other web pages and applications on their device during the exam. This includes blocking screen capture, instant messaging, social networking, virtual machines, remote desktops, and screen sharing.
Restricted Navigation
- The browser menu and toolbar options are limited, allowing only basic navigation functions like Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop. Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching are also disabled.
Secure Assessment Completion
- Students cannot exit the assessment until it has been submitted for grading, preventing them from closing the browser prematurely and potentially accessing unauthorized materials.
Integrated Support for Learning Management Systems
- LockDown Browser integrates seamlessly with various learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Schoology, Moodle, Blackboard, and Brightspace. This allows instructors to set up and manage exams within their existing LMS environment.
Device Compatibility
- The browser is compatible with a range of devices, including Windows 10/11, Mac OS 10.13 , Chromebooks, and iPads (iOS 11 ), provided the instructor has enabled the iPad setting.
Secure Links and Resources
- Instructors can include links to external web pages within test questions without compromising the locked environment. When these links are clicked, a new secure window opens, preventing navigation away from the specified page.
Essential System Functions
- While blocking malicious or cheating-related applications, LockDown Browser does not interfere with essential system functions such as security and anti-virus software, ensuring the computer remains protected during the exam.
Additional Considerations
- Privacy: LockDown Browser respects student privacy by not requiring students to create a Respondus account and not sending data to a Respondus server during exam sessions, except in cases where an exam is exited early.
- Compatibility Note: As of June 28, 2023, LockDown Browser will no longer function on machines running Windows 7, requiring students to upgrade to supported operating systems.
In summary, Respondus LockDown Browser is a robust tool that helps maintain the integrity of online exams by creating a secure and controlled testing environment, thereby reducing the potential for academic dishonesty.
