Product Overview: Robin the Robot

Introduction

Robin the Robot, developed by Expper Technologies, is an emotionally intelligent, AI-powered robotic companion designed to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to hospitalized patients, particularly children and seniors. This innovative robot is crafted to address the emotional and social needs of patients, enhancing their hospital experience and overall well-being.

Key Features

Emotional Intelligence and Real-Time Analysis

Robin is equipped with advanced AI technology that enables it to analyze facial expressions, vocal tones, and the context of conversations in real-time. This capability allows Robin to identify and respond to patients’ emotional states, such as happiness, sadness, anger, or anxiety, with appropriate empathetic expressions and responses.

Interactive and Engaging Design

Robin features a friendly, non-humanoid design with a four-foot-tall sleek and “huggable” white plastic body, easy to clean and disinfect. Its big blue eyes on a computer screen “face” display a variety of emotions, making it relatable and comforting for patients. The robot moves smoothly on a base of three multi-directional wheels, omitting arms and legs to avoid any intimidating appearance.

Conversational Capabilities

Robin engages in conversations, explains medical procedures in simple terms, jokes, and plays games with patients. It uses a Markov Decision Process to maximize positive emotions by adjusting its behavior based on the patient’s emotional condition. The robot’s memory network stores key points from interactions, allowing it to recall and continue conversations naturally.

Multilingual Support

Robin is currently fluent in American English and Armenian, and it is in the process of learning Spanish, expanding its ability to interact with a broader range of patients.

Continuous Learning

Robin learns from each patient interaction, continuously improving its algorithms to recognize emotional states better and provide more effective responses. This continuous learning enables Robin to become more adept at providing emotional support in various scenarios.

Protocols for Specific Needs

Robin has predefined protocols for handling specific patient needs, such as geriatric patients with recurring panic attacks. It guides patients through breathing exercises and asks questions to help them feel better, demonstrating a personalized and caring approach.

Functionality

  • Emotional Support: Robin provides emotional comfort by interpreting and responding to patients’ emotions, helping to distract them from pain and stress.
  • Medical Procedure Explanation: It explains upcoming medical procedures in a simple and reassuring manner.
  • Interactive Games and Conversations: Robin engages patients in games, shows pictures, and discusses topics of interest to them, such as dinosaurs or favorite animals.
  • Real-Time Adaptation: The robot adjusts its responses in real-time based on the patient’s emotional state, ensuring a personalized and empathetic interaction.
  • Remote Human Support: While semi-automated, Robin’s interactions can be supported by remote human operators to ensure comprehensive care.

Deployment and Expansion

Currently, there are 27 Robins operating in the US and Armenia, with plans to deploy about 30 more by the end of 2025 as Expper Technologies expands nationally in the US, then Europe, and globally.

Conclusion

In summary, Robin the Robot is a groundbreaking emotionally intelligent companion that leverages AI and robotics to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to hospitalized patients, making it a valuable innovation in the healthcare industry.
