Disco XT - Short Review

Music Tools

Disco XT is a comprehensive DJ software designed to facilitate professional-grade DJ mixing, music playback, and audio effecting. Here’s an overview of what the product does and its key features:

Primary Function

Disco XT is an audio application that enables DJs to mix music, manage playlists, and apply various effects to their audio tracks. It is suitable for both live performances and studio use.

Key Features

Dual Audio Decks

Disco XT features dual audio decks, allowing DJs to control two separate audio players simultaneously. This setup supports seamless transitions between tracks and enables the use of separate headphone and speaker outputs, which is particularly useful for prelistening tracks and adjusting transitions without affecting the main output.

Audio Output Management

The software supports the use of multiple audio interfaces, including 4-channel audio interfaces or two different audio interfaces/soundcards. This allows for separate headphone and speaker outputs, which is essential for live mixing where the DJ needs to prelisten tracks using headphones while the main playlist plays through speakers.

Transition Editor

Disco XT includes a robust transition editor that allows DJs to fine-tune transitions between songs. Features include ‘Trim Start’ and ‘Trim End’ knobs to automatically adjust the start and end positions of tracks to remove silence or quietness. The ‘Fades’ Off/On button enables prelistening of transitions without fade-in and fade-out effects, aiding in beat-matching.

BPM Detection and Tempo Adjustment

The software has automatic BPM (beats per minute) detection and allows for manual adjustment of the playback tempo. DJs can click and drag the BPM display to adjust the tempo, or use the tempo slider on the audio player. The option to play a song without changing its tempo is also available.

Playlist and Library Management

Disco XT allows users to create folders containing playlists or other folders, and it features list tabs that enable different song list states to be stored on separate tabs. This facilitates quick filtering and switching between different genres or playlists without having to reselect them from the browser lists.

Effects and Mixing Tools

The software includes a crossfader for smooth transitions between the two audio players, and it supports various effects. In Automix mode, the crossfader is not used, but DJs can select ‘Fade Now’ to change the song before it ends. Additionally, synchronized samplers with instant record and playback slots are available, allowing for live remixes.

Autogain and Recording

Disco XT features Autogain, which adjusts the gain of songs based on their loudness. This feature is not visible on the mixer but can be enabled or disabled through the ‘Playback Options’ menu. The software also allows for exporting mixes as audio files or recording them in real-time.

User Interface and Customization

The interface includes zoomable waveform displays, and users can customize the layout by selecting ‘Sub-Tabs’ from the ‘Edit’ menu and using ‘List Tabs’ from the ‘View’ menu. This flexibility helps in organizing and accessing different song lists efficiently.

Saving and Exporting Mixes

DJs can save their mixes as Disco XT documents, which include song starting times and transitions. These documents can be opened later, and mixes can be exported as audio files or recorded in real-time.

In summary, Disco XT is a powerful DJ software that offers a wide range of features to enhance live performances and studio mixing, making it a versatile tool for professional and aspiring DJs alike.
