RPM2 Footbeds - Short Review

Sports Tools

Product Overview: RPM2 Footbeds

RPM2 Footbeds are innovative, wearable technology designed to monitor and measure performance metrics for athletes, particularly in cycling, running, and other land-based sports. Here’s a detailed look at what the product does and its key features.

What RPM2 Footbeds Do

RPM2 Footbeds are equipped with four force-measuring sensors and an accelerometer, which are integrated into a shoe insole. These sensors gather data on the force applied by the foot, allowing athletes to monitor their performance in real-time. This data is crucial for optimizing training, identifying biomechanical issues, and enhancing overall athletic performance.

Key Features

Design and Compatibility

  • The footbeds are designed to replace or be used in conjunction with existing shoe insoles. They come in six sizes, ranging from women’s 3 to men’s 15, and must be cut to fit the individual’s shoe.
  • The footbeds are not waterproof, so they should not be submerged in water, but can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap or alcohol.

Charging and Battery Life

  • Each footbed takes approximately 60 minutes to fully charge using the provided wireless charging mat. Fully charged footbeds can last up to six hours during high-energy activities like cycling or running, and up to 30 hours in idle mode.

Data Measurement and Analysis

  • The footbeds measure various performance metrics, including total power output, pressure distribution across the foot, step time, and cadence. For cycling, the system can monitor data over a six-hour ride, taking five random 10-second samples. For running, it can track data over a 100-meter dash or a longer run up to four hours.
  • The data can be analyzed in different modes: standing pressure, pre-set exercises (like knee extension and hip extension), and dynamic movements (such as running or cycling).

Integration and Compatibility

  • RPM2 Footbeds are compatible with ANT technology, allowing data transmission to compatible head units. The data can also be integrated with training platforms like Training Peaks using the RPM2 apps for iOS and Android.

Models and Pricing

  • There are two main models: the standard model ($599) for running and other land-based sports, and the ‘Triathlete’ model ($649) which includes additional cycling features. A ‘dummy’ version without electronics is also available for $30.

Software and Updates

  • The system requires a monthly monitoring fee, currently $20 per month, although introductory offers may reduce this cost. Software updates are free and can be downloaded through the app store. Firmware updates are sent wirelessly to the footbeds.

Functionality

Real-Time Monitoring

  • Athletes can monitor their performance in real-time using their phone or compatible head unit, allowing for immediate adjustments to their technique and training.

Training Options

  • The system offers various training modes, including standing pressure measurements, pre-set exercises to measure range of motion, and dynamic movement analysis during activities like running or cycling.

Health and Biomechanics

  • The footbeds provide insights into weight distribution and pressure across different quadrants of the foot, helping athletes identify and correct biomechanical imbalances.

In summary, RPM2 Footbeds offer a comprehensive solution for athletes to monitor and improve their performance through detailed data analysis, real-time feedback, and compatibility with various training platforms.
